Chainsaw Course PPE and Requirements
Required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Chaps (must cover boots by 2")
Hardhat (4 or 6 point, cannot be metal or carbon fiber) - ANSI Z89.1-2014 approved
Safety glasses - Z87.1 approved. If you normally wear eyeglasses, you need to have Z87.1 rated over-the-glasses style goggles, or prescription safety glasses.
Standard eyeglasses are not sufficient on their own
An ANSI-approved mesh face shield can be worn over standard eyeglasses or instead of safety glasses for cutting. Solid-lens glasses are required for re-fueling.
Gloves - grippier gloves for when it's wet out, cut-resistant gloves when handling or sharpening chains
Hearing protection (ear muffs or ear plugs)
Long pants & long-sleeve shirt
Boots - lace-up with good ankle support and tread. Cut resistant (leather), not mesh. Must be tall enough to have 2" of overlap with your chaps when standing upright. You do NOT need safety toes.
First Aid kit (tourniquet is recommended)
Requirements for class
Must have a current OSHA-approved First Aid/CPR certification
Must be at least 18 years old.
Certifications
Most students will receive an A certification (entry level).
Those demonstrating strong skills and safe working knowledge may qualify for a B certification (intermediate).
Certifications are valid for 3 years. Note that First aid certifications are only good for 2 years!
Equipment
Gas-powered chainsaw in good working order. Top handle saws are not permitted for usage as they are for use in-tree only. Some E saws are allowed. Contact us.
Fuel & oil. Metal containers for carrying fuel (no Gatorade bottles)
Axe in good condition and wedges
Spare chain
Sharpening kit
Scrench for loosening bar nuts and adjusting chain tension
Bar cover (if shoulder carrying) that covers up the chain and attaches to the saw. Even better if it covers the dogs and muffler. You can make your own, here is an example of a prebuilt one - Chainsaw Bar Cover | The Pack Shack | Wildland Firefighting Packs, Bags & Accessories (truenorthgear.com)
First aid kit (ideally a tourniquet)
